Teacher Unions give Government timeline to pay CPD Allowance

Three Teacher Unions have given management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) timeline to make payment of 2022 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Allowance to teachers across the country.

A joint letter signed by Thomas T. Musah – General Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Angel Carbonu – President of National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and King Ali Awudu – President of Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) to the Director-General of GES said, Payment of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Allowance must be made before the end of 31st December 2022.

It will be recalled that the Teacher Unions officially wrote to Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, the Director-General of Ghana Education Service on the 12th of September 2022 to remind the GES of the 2022 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance for Teaching Staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES) as enjoined by Section 16 of the Collective Agreement.

This call comes after speculations of an alleged proposed deduction of teachers 2022 CPD allowance for modems and TLMs.

The Teacher Unions and GES have since dissociated themselves from the alleged speculation, stating that, there is no plan to make such deduction.

In 2020, the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Education announced payment of Continuous Professional Development Allowance for Ghanaian Teachers.

First and second payments of the Continuous Professional Development Allowances were made in November 2020 and November 2021 respectively.

Meanwhile, the November 2021 Continuous Professional Development Allowance was affected by a deduction of GH¢509.55 meant for TM1 laptop for teachers.

According to the proposal, government absorbed 70% cost of the laptop while each teacher was deducted 30% of the cost of the laptop.

That notwithstanding, the three major Teacher Unions in Education have jointly directed GES to ensure that, 2022 payment of Continuous Professional Development Allowance is made before end of December 2022.
