The Paramount Chief of Abeadze Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi has pledged to liaise with his colleague traditional leaders to enforce compulsory Monthly distribution of Sanitary pads to schools.
Doing this, according to him, would make school girls comfortable at school and encourage them to learn for a brighter future.
Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi made this call during the launch of “Fill the Pad Bank Initiative” organized by the Mfantseman Municipal Directorate of Education.
“I have a personal interest in this all-important project and I pledge the traditional council’s support for its successful implementation,” Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi revealed.
The paramount chief, who doubles as the former Vice President of the National House of Chiefs, again pledged to engage with his fellow Paramount Chiefs from other traditional councils in Mfantseman to support this initiative.
He appealed to the general public, and co-operate bodies to donate in cash and kind into the pad bank.
Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi observed that due to the lack of Sanitary pads, some female girls drop out of school, thereby becoming a burden on their families, society and the country as a whole.
Girls Education Officer at Mfantseman Education Directorate, Madam Cynthia Buckman believed “the pad bank initiative would help girls meet their needs as they go through their menstrual cycle, especially in rural communities where they could not afford sanitary pads”.
She disclosed that Mfantseman Education Directorate encountered absenteeism and drop out challenges in Schools within the Municipality due to the negative social norms surrounding menstrual hygiene management.
“As a Girls Education Officer, I thought it wise to rescue girls from being one week absent from school just because of menstrual period by coming out with this ‘fill the pad bank’ initiative because Menstrual health should never be a barrier to a girl’s future”, Madam Buckman stated.
The program was well attended by some heads of Schools, Mfantesman Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Ransford Appiah, PTA excutives, students, traditional rulers and teachers among others.
