MTN Ghana has reiterated the need for Ghanaians to help safeguard the communication cables belonging to the company to ensure quality service delivery.

The Network Group Manager for Southwest, Maxwell Acquah explained that many network challenges that were reported in the various communities across the country, were due to Fibre cuts.

Maxwwell Acquah made the statement at Enchi in Ghana’s Western North Region, where MTN held a 3-day community engagement to sensitive residents within the Aowin Traditional Area on “fibre cuts caused by illegal mining (galamsey) activities, palm wine tapping, and fuel theft”.

Stakeholders engaged included traditional leaders, youth groups, officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Muslim community, and the media.

Some of the issues raised were; “disruptions linked to military anti‑galamsey operations, network gaps along Enchi–Asankragua–Sefwi corridor, fuel theft and fiber vandalism impacts”.

The Network Group Manager identified illegal mining activities as a major cause of action destroying the company’s cables in the area.

He further pointed out that farmers had also been cutting off the cables for no apparent reason.

A phenomenon that continues to affect MTN’s network and its operations, causing customers to bear the brunt.

“For sometime, we’ve seen people cut the cables and that’s what causes the network challenges. Palmwine tappers also use the pipes covering the cables for their activities and as a result, cut many of our fibers”, Maxwell Acquah stressed.

The company’s commitment to the community was also reaffirmed by the traditional leadership.
