Ghana’s future is digital – MTN Ghana CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett has underscored the importance of information technology and disclosed that Ghana’s future is digital, which is inclusive and globally competitive.

He pointed out that young people would define the future, indicating that “AI is changing our world rapidly and the next five phase of Ghana’s development would be built on mobile platforms, on farms, markets, clinics, classrooms and creative studios. Technology will remove geography as a disadvantage and open the Ghanaian talent to the world”.

As MTN prepares responsibly for the next wave, the CEO stated that the company hoped to strengthen fiber infrastructure, and lay the groundwork for advanced technologies that would power productivity, innovation and growth.

“we are committed to building networks that serve today’s need without compromising tomorrow, to help Ghana compete in the digital world”.

Stephen Blewett was speaking at the MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary media launch, with the theme; “30years of Progress Powered by You”.

“This is not just a corporate anniversary, this is a Ghanaian story told through three decades of connection, progress and possibility. A story not about towers and cables, but about people whose lives have been transformed by the simple ability to connect”.

He touched on the communal association with the MTN brand, and how Ghanaians have embraced MTN over the decades, not just as customers but invested stakeholders.

“It reminds us that Ghanaians do not see MTN as distant infrastructure. They see it as their network, their platform, their enabler”, Stephen Blewett reiterated.

He thanked customers of MTN for trusting the company with their livelihood, voices, data and businesses

He further thanked the government and regulators for the partnership and foresight and appreciated the media for telling the MTN story and holding the company accountable as well.

“30years ago, distance was a problem and as MTN Ghana evolved distance begun to lose its power and connectivity moved from luxury to a necessity. Transformation sits at the heart of our theme for this 30years celebration”, the MTN Ghana CEO pointed out.

On MoMo, Stephen Blewett indicated that MoMo was not just a product, it was access. “Access to the formal economy, Access to safety and dignity and Access to growth”.

“Today millions of Ghanaians rely on mobile money everyday. It supports households, businesses, agents and all kinds of value chains”.

On MTN Ghana Foundation, he explained that the company had invested tens of millions of Ghana cedis to education, health, skills and economic development.

The CEO was however proud of the journey so far, and indicated the company’s commitment to building the future, together.

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, in an address mentioned the pivotal and transformational role MTN Ghana had played in the growth of the ICT ecosystem over the past decades.

“Through sustained investment in network expansion, fibre deployment and continuous technology updates, MTN has helped move Ghana from basic telephony to a modern data enabled economy laying the foundations that now support virtually every sector. It has reshaped how Ghanaians communicate, do business, and access digital services and consistently remained at the forefront of innovation in a dynamic and highly competitive market”, he stated.

The Communications Minister however urged the company to ensure affordable access for all citizens, strengthening infrastructure resilience, including power reliability and fibre protection.

He further challenged MTN to deepen cybersecurity and data protection, closing digital skills gaps, especially among the youth, and advancing environmental sustainability in network expansion.
