The opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) in the Effutu constituency of the Central Region have alleged that the incumbent Member of Parliament(MP) for the area, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin is using the Winneba Divisional Commander, ACP Jeffrey Darko to torment and intimidate NDC members in the constituency.
The party again accused the Commander of being biased as he(ACP Darko) ignored complaints from the NDC members but was quick to act on complaints from the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP).
According to them, they were disappointed to see the Winneba Divisional Commander participating in the Effutu NPP unity walk.
‘When this happened the NDC nearly assaulted the Divisional Commander for his unprofessional conduct”, they indicated.
The NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the area, Dr. James Kofi Annan, speaking to the media on the allegations, accused the Divisional Commander for allowing himself to be used by Mr Afenyo-Markin to foment trouble in the constituency.
According to him, they duly notified the police about the NDC’s demonstration two weeks earlier and they were given the go ahead but the NPP alerted the police four days before their unity walk to be held on the same date as the NDC’s, which is contrary to the public order act on public events or demonstrations.
This led to a clash of the two major political parties.
“Even though the police team that was already on the ground managed to handle the situation, the arrival of the Winneba Divisional Commander, ACP Darko, who was following the NPP walk got the situation escalated as members of the NDC accused him of taking sides”, Kofi Annan stressed.
“I blamed the divisional Commander who has assumed a partisanship position in this constituency and lauded the Ghana Police Service senior and junior rank in the Effutu constituency for ensuring there was order” he lamented.
Dr. Kofi Annan called on voters of Effutu constituency and the general public to reject the NPP in the upcoming elections but rather vote massively for NDC no matter the intimidation.
