18 Communities Vow to Boycott December 7 Elections in Protest of Abandoned Bridge
Story: Shadrack Owusu Asante, Assin Fosu
Eighteen communities in the Assin South District, including Assin Adadientam Nō 1, 2, and 3, Owonta, Abodweseso, among others, are threatening to boycott the impending general elections.
They subsequently vowed to block roads linking the various communities on the election day, if the abandoned bridge connecting the communities was not fixed.
“This bridge has been in disrepair for four years, causing difficulties for residents, drivers, and commuters”, they lamented.
The situation escalated when an articulated truck got stuck while trying to maneuver an alternative route.
The residents expressed outrage over the alarming number of fatal accidents that had occurred in the area due to the bridge’s deplorable state, emphasizing that those tragedies could have been avoided, if the bridge had been properly maintained.
They indicated their frustration, feeling of neglect by the government, and thus saw no need of voting, if the situation was not addressed.
The residents therefore appealed to local authorities, specifically “the Member of Parliament for the Area, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and the District Chief Executive Madam Felicia Amissah Ntrakwah, to step in and ensure the contractor completes the abandoned project, thereby alleviating the community’s plight”.
Meanwhile, Hon. Simon Mensah, the Assemblyman for Assin Adadientam Abodweseso Electoral Area, on his part, said he had written several letters to the authorities, drawing attention to the abandoned bridge, but all his efforts had proven futile.
