The Assin North District Education Directorate has revealed that the high rate of teenage pregnancy in the area continues to hamper the education of girls in the district.
Assin North District topped the teenage pregnancy prevalence in the Central Region with 16.7 percent of the total recorded cases, according to the Central Regional Health Directorate.
The Deputy Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Pinnocke Amoo-Tinkorang speaking on behalf of the District Education Director, Ms. Juliet Dufie Otame, attributed the phenomenon to the lack of proper parental care, provision of basic needs such as menstrual pads and food among others.

He stated that ” as a result of their plight, commercial motor (Okada) riders take advantage of these girls, lure them and have sexual intercourse with them and subsequently impregnate them”.
Mr Tinkorang made the disclosure in an interview with gnewsprime.com.
He further mentioned a number of challenges facing education in the District and stated that ” Junior High School final year students in the area, after registering for their BECE exams, boycott classes and rather engage in galamsey activities among other trade”, a situation he bemoaned.
“Teachers accommodation and lack of adequate classrooms have forced schools in the area to combine some of the classes, affecting quality education in the area”.
He therefore called on all stakeholders to join hands to help address the challenge in the District.
