Fear gripped residents of Mempeasem Nsuoakyi in the Assin Fofu Municipality, as a new born baby was found dead near the Pentecost Church in the area.
Residents believed the baby might have been aborted and dumped near the church, as the umbilical cord was not cut and the placenta left unburied.
Expressing their shock to this reporter, the residents stated that “the situation is unusual in this area” and therefore, called on the police to deal with such perpetrators if found.
Meanwhile, the Assin Fosu Police Command and the Environmental Health Department have retrieved and buried the body.
However, the Probation Officer of the Social Welfare and Community Development in Assin Fosu, Ms. Josephine Kwaning has advised young girls “to desist from relying on men for survival, avoid unprotected sexual activity and find something meaningful to do to better their lives in order not to find themselves with any unwanted pregnancy”.
She said “ the Social Welfare Department has a responsibility to protect the rights of children but it’s unfortunate this was found dead”.
