FDA Launches Investigations into ‘Expired Energy Drink’ Saga

The Central Regional branch of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has initiated investigations into the consumption of expired energy drinks in some communities in the Assin South District of the Central Region of Ghana.

The FDA visited the communities to have first hand information, following the publication that some residents in Assin Kassim, Aworoso, and Aduanom among other communities rushed to grab suspected expired energy drinks called “Sports Energy drink” upon seeing the drinks disposed of along the road.

The residents who were said to have been excited about the phenomenon ignorantly started packing the products into shops for sale, whiles others took some for personal consumption without checking the expiry date, which was March 10, 2022.

A number of people were said to have been hospitalized after that incident, even though health officials in the communities have not confirmed whether it was as a result of the consumption of the expired energy drink.

But nurses were reported to have confirmed that cases of vomiting and other related diseases shot up during that week.

The Acting Central Regional Director of the FDA, Francisca Obeng cautioned the residents and Ghanaians at large against the consumption of expired products which she said has serious health implications.

She called on Ghanaians to assist the FDA with information to combat such illicit behaviour in the country and ensure public safety.

Madam Francisca Obeng maintained that her outfit has launched investigations into the matter and that perpetrators would be brought to book.
