Open Defecation: Kuntanase Residents shit around Rivers, Bush…..as toilet facilities are locked up

The only functioning water closet toilet facility at Breman Kuntanase Community in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District of the Central Region has been locked up and left to deteriorate without use for the past two years.

The situation is said to have forced the residents to openly defecate indiscriminately at places such as the riverside and bush, while others also use polythene bags, and chamber pots which they later dump in streams since they are left with no alternative.

Speaking in an interview, the community members explained that “the toilet facility was locked up because of a breakdown of the engine of the mechanised borehole which was used to pump the water to the tank”.

The residents, therefore, expressed fear of an outbreak of a disease and also said they were worried of seeing the nakedness of elderly women. They however called on the government and other benevolent organizations to come to their aid.

Meanwhile, the Assemblymember for the area, Mr. Patrick Ebo Quainoo said the locked-up one was not the only facility in the area, but the other three toilet facilities were also closed down due to similar reasons but persistent efforts to get authorities to fix them yielded no positive results.

He also called on the public to come to their aid as the incessant open defecation was causing serious health risks to the residents.
