
The Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), CDCO Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood Mensah has emphasized that recent incidents of disasters in the region are warnings that the management of disasters must never be reactive.
He stated that disaster management must be strategic, inclusive and well coordinated.
He indicated that a number of fire disaster incidents, including domestic and commercial fires were reported daily in the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the region.
CDCO Kwesi Dawood further stated that recent disasters in the Central Region affected low-lying areas like Cape Coast, Mankessim, Winneba, Breman Asikuma, Elmina, and Budumburam among others.
“It is a clear signal of our shared commitment to safeguard lives and the environment”, he added.
The Regional Director of NADMO was speaking during an inauguration of the Central Regional Disaster Management committee in Cape Coast on Thursday 17th July, 2025.
“The establishment of the committee marks a step towards proactive, coordinated and community centered disaster management in the region”.
According to CDCO Kwesi Dawood, the committee was set up in line with Ghana’s legal and institutional framework for disaster risk management, which mandates disaster governance at all levels.
He explained that there had been Coastal erosion in communities such as Ankaful, Komenda and Moree.
Stressing, Environmental degradation from illegal sand mining in Abakrampa, Nsanful, Gomoa Nyanyano, Mankessim and Twifo Praso among others accounted for the severe flooding in recent times.
”Mining activities in Upper Denkyira West and East, Assin North, South and Central, Twifo Atti Mokwa, Hemang Lower Denkyira, KEEA, Mfantseman and Gomoa West, has created landslides, mudslides and other forms of geological disasters”, he maintained.
Hence, the Central Regional Disaster Management Committee, which is vital to the fight against disasters.
“The committee is expected to develop regional disaster preparedness and response plans, coordinate with district committees, NADMO offices, national and international bodies”.
It is also to conduct risk assessments and identify vulnerable communities, ensure timely mobilization and distribution of relief resources.
They are again to help promote public education and community resilience initiatives and to further advocate for risk-informed development planning across all sectors.
The Regional Director of NADMO however appealed to all stakeholders to contribute their quota towards the prevention of disasters through diverse means.
The Central Regional Minister, Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, pledged his outfit’s unflinching support to the fight against disasters in the Region.
